These days many parents are concerned with the overall health of their children. Some children don’t gain weight, some are facing the issues of constipation or bloating at a very tender age and some are already moving towards obesity. A child’s overall health is determined by how active he or she is. There are cases when a child is so active that he burns all the calories he eats in a day. So, is weight the milestone to check if your child is healthy. No, it’s not.

If you truly want to know the health of a child, then you have to observe these three things in him. His overall health will be perfectly determined by just these three things. If he is doing all of them properly, then you have nothing to worry.

A child’s health is all about his digestion. If he is able to digest what you are offering as food and his body is absorbing all the nutrition, then he is healthy irrespective of his weight. Louise Goldberg, RD, LD, owner of An Apple A Day Nutrition Consulting in Houston, Texas has come up with an approach of three things to notice.

Fiber

Fiber plays an essential role in keeping us healthy. It aids our digestion and helps our body clear our digestive tracts after it has absorbed all the nutrition it had to offer. Many health organisations recommend that a child between the age of 1-3 years should eat around 19 grams of fiber everyday. Where as the children from 4-9 should eat almost 25grams. (ALSO READ: Nutritional Guide For Your Baby’s Overall Development)

Which foods are rich in Fiber?

  • Beans
  • Peas
  • Lentils
  • Broccoli
  • Apple and Pear
  • Sprouts
  • Museli
  • Berries
  • Barn flakes
  • Barley
  • Oats

Fluids

As we all already know that our bodies are more than 70%water. We need lots of water to function properly. Since our kids sweat much more than we do, they need more water. For having a healthy digestion your child needs to drink lots and lots of water. It will prevent the dehydration and will also save the horrifying episodes of constipation.

You can offer juices to your children if they don’t like drinking water too much. Please avoid the packaged juices you get in the market. They are not at all natural and contain lots of preservatives. What’s better than making them a glass of fresh juice? You can also add coconut water to your child’s diet because it has all the essential electrolytes a body needs. (ALSO READ: 5 Immunity Boosting Foods For Your Baby)

When a child eats proper food and there is a lack of water in his body, it becomes a super glue kind of a situation in his intestines. All fiber trying to move through but not  enough water to make it smooth.

Exercise

The third and the last key to a good digestive system is exercise. If your child is spending most of his time engaged in the indoor activities then you need to make sure that he gets enough play time outdoors too. His body needs to work out so as to keep his digestion intact. Playing is not just good for your digestion, it is great for building immunity, for your heart health and for your lungs.

When your child will indulge in physical activity, the food will move faster through the gastro intestinal tract and will make him feel more energetic. He will feel hungry gain and again and his digestion will be enhanced multifolds just by playing for an hour.
