The Modi Government reshuffled the cabinet on Sunday and it not only became a historical day for our country, it became unforgettable for women too. For the first time in the history of India, Nirmala Sitharaman became the first woman to handle the defense portfolio full time.
She became the second woman Defense minister our country has seen after Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi shared the responsibility of being a defense minister alongside being the Prime Minister in between 1980 and 1982.
Before Nirmala Sitharaman took the oath of being the Defense minister she was the Minister of State at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. After taking the oath, she said,
“Somebody who has come from a small town, grown into the party with all the support of the leadership, and if given such responsibility, it just makes you feel sometimes that cosmic grace is there. Otherwise, it is impossible.”
Talking about the government’s commitment for women empowerment and for chosing women for higher roles, she said, “I know Prime Minister Modi’s working style since the time he was in Gujarat … He always believes in giving women their due share. His belief is that women can also perform.”
The entire nation has poured in their wishes for the new defense minister. Piyush Goel was sworn in as the new Railways Minister instead of Suresh Prabhu. Overall four ministers were elevated to cabinet ranks and nine new ministers were sworn in by the President Ram Nath Kovind as part of the cabinet shuffle. You can watch the entire ceremony where four other ministers were also given new ministries to handle.
